Potable water for all the people in the State is an ambitious target that is craving for realization and that is what the W. Resources Minister is boldly confronting. The Water Resources Department is engaged in planning, developing conserving and managing the water resources of the State on an integrated and environmentally sound basis keeping in view the socio-economic aspects and needs of the State. Fresh Water being an essential environment for existence it has been given a crucial place in developmental planning. Irrigation for sustained agriculture, water for uninterrupted running of a large number of industries, fresh water for healthy human condition in rural and urban surroundings and a continuous clean flow of water for desalination and natural cleansing processes are all to be looked after.

 
Strides in Water Resources Utilisation
The three years of LDF rule saw vigorous and prudent implementation of schemes for optimum utilisation of the water resources of the state.  The thrust, of course, was on the speedy implementation of drinking water schemes.  KWA could rise to the occasion and deliver services giving no room for complaint.  In Mullaperiyar and related issues the LDF Government was able to staunchly protect the interests of the state.

Rs. 700 crore SAP Drinking Water Projects

Kerala Water Authority has taken up the completion of 36 drinking water schemes that were abandoned at different stages with the support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). This massive programme, SPAN or Special Package Assisted by NABARD costing Rs. 700 crore was inaugurated at Chakkarakkal, Kannur on January 19, 2009 by Water Resources Minister. The Anjarakkandi – Perlassery scheme one of the 36 schemes, inaugurated by the Minister was stopped midway after spending Rs. 40.65 crore owing to delay in laying transmission line. The revised project estimate of this scheme is Rs. 134 crore. For all the 36 schemes Rs. 160 crore had already been spent earlier.

Events

In spite of depletion of water resources Kerala is still considered a state that wasted its surplus water resources.  Hence a project for preparing data about the available resources to plan for the future is set in motion.
